Utah History Day State Contest

Many thanks to Hillcrest Junior High School for hosting our state contest! It is a beautiful new school, centrally located just off I-15, with plenty of restaurants and shopping nearby. Hillcrest is about one block east of Murray High School.

Many thanks to the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies, the Fort Douglas Military Museum, the University of Utah Department of History, and the Smith-Pettit Foundation for offering the following special awards at the 2016 State Competition:
Important! If you would like your project to be considered for a special award, you must nominate it in your registration profile. Here’s how: go to ut.nhd.org and login using the same username and password you used to register. You will see the special award options there. Your project must fit the parameters of the award for which you apply.
ELIGIBILITY
The State Competition is open to qualifying entries in the Junior and Senior Division, who are advanced from one of Utah’s ten Regional History Day competitions.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS
Take I-15 into Salt Lake. Take the 5300 South exit and go east. Continue across State Street. Hillcrest Junior High School is about 1 ½ blocks further on your right. The school is about a 15-minute walk from the Murray Central TRAX and FrontRunner stations.
PARKING AND DROP-OFF
Parking at the school is limited, but there is ample additional parking across the street next to the hotel. Please drop your student and project materials off at the front doors first, then go park your car. To reach the overflow parking lot, turn north as though entering the hotel, turn right immediately after the hotel, and go up the hill. There is a stairway that leads from this lot down to the street, where you can cross at the crosswalk.
DOWN TIME
There will be down time during the day, especially in the afternoon. Bring your own board games or electronic devices to play in the Commons. Things to do nearby include Fashion Place Mall, Indoor Ice Skating at Salt Lake County Ice, and Murray Park. Or hop on the freeway to visit attractions such as Living Planet Aquarium (Draper), Gardner Village (Midvale), or downtown Salt Lake City.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE STATE COMPETITION
One of the best things about History Day is the opportunity to improve your project as you progress to the next level of competition. We encourage you to consider the judges feedback, do more research, and improve your project. You are welcome to rework your text, artwork, script, writing, etc. to make your project the best it can be!

- Registration is Automatic: Those who qualify to advance to state will be registered by their coordinators.
- Cancellations Due: Friday, March 25, 10 pm. If you cannot attend the state contest, be sure to notify us by this date.
- Title Changes Due: Friday, March 25, 10 pm. If you have changed the title of your project, please correct it in the NHD Registration system.
- Special Award Nominations Due: Friday, March 25, 10 pm.
- Paper Entries Due: Thursday, March 31, 5 pm. Email a pdf to [email protected], AND send 4 copies, printed and stapled, to Utah History Day, 300 S. Rio Grande Street, SLC UT 84101.
- Websites Lock for Judging: Sunday, April 3, 10 pm
- Documentary Uploads Due: Sunday, April 3, 10 pm

- History of Science – For outstanding projects dealing with the history of science, medicine, or technology. Sponsored by the University of Utah Department of History.
- Military History – For outstanding projects dealing with the history of war or the military. Sponsored by the Fort Douglas Military Museum.
- Western History – For outstanding projects dealing with the American West (Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, or Wyoming). Sponsored by the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies, BYU.
- World History – For projects focusing on any world area outside the United States, including European history. Sponsored by the University of Utah Department of History.
